I began this pencil sketch of the tulips
with the darkest flower on the right. I shaded in the areas of each
petal in layers of graphite, building up the dark values gradually.
Then I used an eraser to smooth out the layers of graphite so that the
petals would not look so grainy.
I used the same process for the rose.
